Let’s go back to 2006.
Back then, life had me at a crossroads. My dreams of a music career were hitting a wall, even as bands around me were scoring deals and stages. The time had come to face reality and look for a “real” job. Armed with a resume resembling a placeholder and no college degree, I ventured into the world of temp agencies to see what options were on the table.
One day, the phone rang with news of an interview at a place called Stratasys in Eden Prairie, MN. I was only told, “They make plastic stuff.” The next morning, dressed for success, I set off in my car, which promptly chose that moment to stall on the highway. Perfect timing, right? I called the temp agency, fully expecting to be relegated to the back burner. To my surprise, they gave me a second chance the next day.
With my friend’s help, my car was resurrected, and I made it to the corporate headquarters of Stratasys, only to find out my interview was in a different building known as “the hacienda,” a mile away. Here’s where things took a comically dramatic turn – I had locked my keys in the car!
Regaining my composure, I returned inside, not to ask for a job but a ride.
The receptionist and I had a good laugh, and she kindly drove me to my actual interview. By then, I had decided to ditch the formalities and be myself. It turned out the interview was a blast, and my escapades on the way there served as an unexpected icebreaker. When it wrapped up, the person who interviewed me offered to drive me back to my car. In terms of a first impression, I was surely racking up points.
Now, here’s where the story takes a fantastic twist. Back at the corporate office, attempting to sort out the locked keys situation, an engineer walked over with a small plastic contraption. He’d heard about my morning ordeal and, in a flash, designed and 3D-printed a slim jim, a tool used to unlock cars. We tested it out, and while it didn’t quite do the trick, I was floored. A 3D-printed solution conjured seemingly out of thin air during my interview! That moment marked my initiation into the world of 3D printing.
Fast forward to today, and I’m still amazed that I landed that job back then. Almost 18 years later, I’m still in the industry. I’ll dive into those 17 years in another article, but the essence I want to share is this:
3D printing thrives on stories. I like to call them “Additive Stories,” a nod to the world of additive manufacturing. Every 3D printed part, regardless of its apparent significance, has a unique narrative woven into it. Whether a quirky slim jim or a life-changing prosthetic, each object has a tale to tell, and I’m here to share it.
